Kibble or natural food? What science really says about canine nutrition
If there's one topic that divides dog owners, it's this: kibble or natural food? And the truth is that both sides are right… and both are incomplete.
For years, we were sold the idea that nutritional balance can only be achieved with "complete and balanced" kibble. And it's true that quality kibble contains essential nutrients. But it's also true that dogs evolved eating fresh food, not processed pellets.
The middle ground: the mixed diet
A longitudinal study from the University of Helsinki (2021) followed over 10,000 dogs and found that those on mixed diets — quality kibble + fresh food — had:
- Fewer gastrointestinal problems
- Better dental health
- Shinier coats
- Lower incidence of food allergies
What should ALWAYS be on your dog's plate
1. Quality animal protein (minimum 25-30% of the plate): chicken, beef, fish, egg. This is the foundation of their diet.
2. Cooked vegetables and fibre (15-20%): pumpkin, carrot, broccoli, spinach. They provide vitamins, minerals and fibre for healthy digestion.
3. Healthy fats (5-10%): salmon oil rich in Omega 3, coconut oil in small amounts. Key for skin, coat and brain function.
What to avoid
- Grapes, raisins, onion, garlic, chocolate and xylitol (toxic)
- Ultra-processed foods with by-products and fillers
- Sudden diet changes (always transition over 7-10 days)
Conclusion: You don't have to pick a side. The best thing for your dog is a varied and balanced diet. Combine quality kibble with fresh food and you'll see the difference.
